Interview: Marlini Naidoo — The Career Coach Who Knows What It Feels Like to Start Over
Some coaches understand career transition intellectually. Marlini Naidoo understands it personally. Founder of Mana-Ora Consulting, certified career coach, and CDANZ member with over twenty years of experience across HR, recruitment, leadership development, and people strategy, Marlini has built her practice around a philosophy she has not just taught but lived through, including redundancy, reinvention, and the kind of self-doubt that does not spare even the most experienced professionals. Her story is one of the most honest in the coaching space, and her work reflects every chapter of it.
The Origin Story: From Indian Classical Dance to Career Coaching
Marlini describes herself as a late bloomer, and she means it without apology. School was not an environment where she naturally thrived, and rather than following a conventional path from classroom to university, she followed something less predictable: a scholarship to study Indian classical dance in India for two years.
That chapter turned out to be transformative in ways she could not have anticipated. Immersed in a completely different culture, she discovered far more than dance. She became more observant, more empathetic, and deeply curious about what motivates and connects human beings across very different contexts. That curiosity sparked a lifelong love of travel and eventually led her to another unexpected chapter: nine years as a flight attendant with South Africa’s national airline.
“I often joke that I got paid to see the world,” she reflects. “But beyond the travel, people became my business.” That understanding of people, relationships, and behaviour became the foundation of everything that followed: two decades across recruitment, HR, leadership development, talent acquisition, succession planning, coaching, and mentoring.
The Turning Point Nobody Talks About Enough
In 2024, Marlini experienced something she is unusually candid about: redundancy. After more than eighteen years in the workforce, she found herself questioning her skills, her experience, her value, and her future. “My confidence took a significant hit,” she says directly. “And yes, all of this happened despite being a career coach.”
What followed was a period of honest reflection that she now describes as one of the most important of her life. She reminded herself of the impact she had made, the people she had supported, and the capabilities she had built across decades. That shift in mindset became a turning point, and from it, Mana-Ora Consulting was born.
She also created a ten-episode Spotify podcast exploring the realities of redundancy, resilience, and rebuilding a career after unexpected change, a resource that reflects exactly the kind of practical, experience-grounded support she wishes had existed when she needed it most. The podcast is available here.
“Redundancy was not the end of my story. It was the beginning of a new chapter.” Coming from someone who has lived it, that statement carries a different weight than it would from a coach who has only observed it from the outside.
Coaching Methodology: Personalised, Practical, and Grounded in Real Experience
As a career coach working with professionals navigating transition, Marlini structures her programmes at Mana-Ora Consulting around four interconnected areas that address both the strategic and the deeply personal dimensions of career change.
Career clarity and goal setting helps clients identify their genuine strengths, values, and definition of success, rather than defaulting to external expectations. Career transition and change support guides professionals through redundancy, career pivots, leadership transitions, and returns to the workforce with both direction and confidence. CV, LinkedIn, and interview coaching provides practical guidance on personal branding, storytelling, and competitive positioning. And accountability and growth mindset work creates a supportive but honest environment where limiting beliefs are challenged and meaningful action becomes possible.
“I don’t believe in one-size-fits-all advice,” she says. “I partner with clients to help them reconnect with their strengths, uncover opportunities, and create meaningful, realistic pathways forward.” Success, in her definition, is not simply securing a new role. It is helping people feel more confident, aligned, and genuinely empowered in both their career and their personal growth journey.
Giving Back as a Core Part of the Practice
What distinguishes Marlini’s work beyond the professional is the consistency of her commitment to community. She volunteers as a career coach with Dress for Success, mentors students through First Foundation and the University of Auckland, and recently guest lectured at MIT, sharing HR and recruitment insights with their Level 4 HR cohort.
As a diverse female migrant to New Zealand, originally from South Africa, she is deliberate about the story she embodies. “I hope my story shows others that resilience, courage, and authenticity can create opportunities beyond what we imagine.” It is a message that runs through every part of her practice, and one she is uniquely positioned to deliver.
Final Insight: Your Greatest Investment Is Always Yourself
Marlini closes with the philosophy that sits at the heart of Mana-Ora Consulting, expressed in the three words she has built her brand around: Rediscover. Realign. Rise.
“There is no such thing as a perfect career path. Life is rarely linear. There will be setbacks, detours, moments of doubt, and times when the destination seems unclear.” The professionals who move through those moments most effectively are not the ones who avoided difficulty. They are the ones who stayed curious, kept learning, and continued to back themselves even when others did not yet see their potential.
“Don’t let where you are today define where you can go tomorrow.” From someone who built a consulting practice out of one of the hardest professional moments of her own life, it is advice worth taking seriously.
