Many people say a smile lights up your face. There are people, however, who do not feel comfortable smiling due to their teeth. Oral hygiene is incredibly important in keeping your teeth healthy and looking their best. 

There are some ways you can improve your oral hygiene and keep your teeth healthy. Here are some tips for you to consider. 


One of the most important ways to take care of your teeth is to establish a proper care routine at home. Start by making sure you brush your teeth twice a day with fluoride toothpaste. If you struggle to remember to brush your teeth, set two reminders on your phone to prompt you before you leave for work and before you head to bed.

Once you have brushed, floss between your teeth. A good dental flosser will remove any food and debris from your teeth and gums, reducing your risk of cavities. 

Dental check-ups

A fear of the dentist is common, but making sure you go for regular check-ups ensures a professional can give them a once over. If your teeth are nice and healthy, you will be advised how long to leave them before your next appointment.

Leaving problems untreated can make them worse and harder to treat. Ignoring tooth issues can lead to pain and discomfort which would be unnecessary if you were to go to the dentist and get it looked at. 

If you have children, taking them to the dentist from a young age reinforces the importance of dental care as well as showing them that there isn’t anything to be scared of. Start by bringing them to your appointments until they are old enough to need their own. 

Avoid certain things

Unfortunately, there are certain foods, drinks and activities that are bad for your teeth. There may be certain things that spring to mind immediately, such as fizzy drinks, sugary foods and fruit juices, but there are a few that may surprise you.

Crisps are not great for your teeth due to their texture. When you eat them it becomes stodgy and can get stuck between and around your teeth. The starch then turns into sugar as it breaks down which plaque loves to feed on.

Another thing to be aware of is how much tea or coffee you drink. These beverages contain tannin which leads to staining on the enamel of your teeth. Tannins also break down that enamel, causing decay. 

Preventing problems

Once you have a routine established and are aware of the damage certain foods and drinks cause, you are helping to prevent future problems.

Be sure to regularly visit your dentist to keep on top of issues and keep your teeth as healthy as possible. Ignoring any issues can lead to further damage which can be painful and costly to repair.
