We have all experienced setbacks in our life. We have all had those moments where we felt like everything was crumbling down on us. Sometimes we have experienced it in heavy dosages. When it rains it pours, right? We let this feeling of inadequacy consume us. We let it take over our mental and physical being and become a slave to the misery. Maybe you are feeling like that right now. The feeling of failure makes us question our purpose in this world. It is truly a terrifying thing. But if there is one thing I can say, it is that failure is not real.
There are only two results in any task that you attempt: winning and learning. Sometimes you will win, sometimes you will learn. What many people label as failure is a blessing in disguise. Failure offers you an abundance to reflect upon and learn from. From failure, you will succeed. How you perceive those lessons will determine your next result.
Life is a self-discovery and self-creation process. Every experience that you endure molds you one step closer to the individual you always wanted to be. Without darkness, you would not appreciate the light.
There is no such thing as failure. There is only the non-attainment of a desired result – Wayne Dyer
Only You Can Deem Yourself A Failure
Only you are chasing your goals. Nobody is doing that for you, in fact, nobody really cares if you win or lose. Even if they do, their opinion is irrelevant. You are writing your own story and with that comes trials, tribulations, and triumphs. You get to decide when you want to pack it all in or keep going. You decide what is a setback or what is a failure.
Thomas Edison could have decided on attempt #10 that the lightbulb idea was a failure, but he didn’t. He just learned from his setbacks and eventually achieved his goal.
Setbacks Are Only Temporary
If you are truly set on achieving your goal, every setback along the way is only temporary. You must understand that every hero that you admire, every sports icon, every billionaire has taken the same path that you are on. It is the path of resistance. This path is tough, but it does not last forever.
So the next time you find yourself feeling defeated by a setback, understand that you are on the same path as your idols and by persevering past this, you are soon to make them your rivals.
Challenges Are What Make You Stronger
A setback is a reminder that you are still breathing. A reminder that you are still fighting to get what you deserve. Once you have learned from your mistake, you are smarter, faster, stronger and better than you were before. Whatever doesn’t kill you only makes you stronger.
Persistence and experimentation will take you to where you want to go. Figure out what you want, and try different things until it works. You will get there, that’s a guarantee.
To Win, You Must Lose
Let’s say you took a helicopter to the peak of Mount Everest. Do you think that even for a second you would feel as accomplished as the ones who climbed to the top? Or even the ones who tried to make it to the top but couldn’t make it? Of course not.
It is only with great resistance that you will experience great triumph. It is only when you’ve eaten a thousand cheese sandwiches that you will truly appreciate the caviar.
Gratitude
The times when setbacks hit you the hardest are when you need to express the most gratitude. Remember the days when you wished to be where you are now? Understand that people would sacrifice a lot to be in your shoes. You’ve overcome obstacles before and this one is not any different.
Anyone can play it easy in life. They can take the path of least resistance too, but what’s the enjoyment in that? You are writing your story, a story that will live on forever, make it worthwhile.
